PolyRig — Bone Weight & Mesh Editor for Godot 【Early Access】

PolyRig is a bone weight and mesh editing plugin for the Godot game engine that helps you create skeletal 2D animations faster and more intuitively.

Godot is a fantastic game engine, but its built-in Polygon2D rigging tools are extremely limited — manually placing mesh vertices is tedious, painting weights one by one is painfully slow, and the weight visualization is practically nonexistent. PolyRig was built to fix all of that. : )

✨ Key Features

Smart Mesh Generation (Auto Geometry)

Stop placing vertices by hand! Generate high-quality, deformation-ready meshes with a single click. PolyRig uses adaptive triangulation, intelligent point distribution, and iterative relaxation (CDT + Poisson Sampling + Lloyd Relaxation) to produce clean, evenly-spaced meshes — just press the button.

Topology-Aware Smart Weights (Auto Weight)

No more spending hours manually painting weights. PolyRig's auto weight system understands the shape of your mesh and the spatial relationship of your bones (Geodesic Inverse Distance Weighting), intelligently assigning weights — smooth transitions at joints, clean falloff at extremities, ready to go out of the box.

Professional Weight Editing Tools

When you need fine control, PolyRig offers 3 vertex weight editing modes:

  • Drag Mode — Directly drag vertex weight values with soft selection support
  • Brush Mode — Adjust weights like painting! Supports add, subtract, set, and smooth operations with adjustable brush strength and size
  • Panel Mode — Precisely input values in the side panel

Weight Visualization

  • Pie Chart View — Instantly see the weight distribution of each vertex at a glance
  • Heatmap View — Intuitive color-mapped overlay showing weight distribution across your entire mesh
  • Bone Coloring — Each bone gets its own distinct color, so you never lose track
  • Real-Time Preview — See changes instantly as you edit — what you see is what you get

💡 Why PolyRig instead of Spine?

Spine is a powerful standalone animation tool, but it comes with trade-offs. It requires a separate runtime integrated into your project, adds to your exported game's file size, and introduces an external dependency you need to maintain. PolyRig takes a different approach. It works entirely within Godot's native Polygon2D and Skeleton2D systems. There's nothing extra bundled into your game — no runtime, no libraries, no hidden overhead. Your exported build stays exactly the same size as if the plugin was never installed. And because it's a pure editor tool, you can install or remove it at any time without affecting your project whatsoever. If you want professional rigging tools without leaving Godot or adding anything to your final build, PolyRig is the lightweight, native alternative.

Zero Pollution, Zero Overhead

  • 100% Native — Written entirely in GDScript, no external dependencies
  • No Custom Nodes — Adds nothing to your scene tree
  • Plug & Unplug — Install or remove at any time, no traces left behind
  • Zero Export Size — As a pure editor plugin, it adds exactly zero bytes to your exported game
